Trigger points are focal areas of spasm and inflammation in muscles. Upper back and behind the shoulder areas are common sites for trigger points. Trigger points in these areas can cause neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches. In addition to the upper spine, trigger points can also occur in the lower back.

Pain radiates from the trigger point itself to the surrounding areas. Trigger points commonly accompany chronic musculoskeletal disorders, tension headaches and TMJ pain. Acute trauma or repetitive minor injury can also lead to the development of trigger points.

Trigger point injections (TPI) are given directly into the trigger points for pain management making the points inactive and relieving the pain.

Typically, acute trigger points can be resolved after one injection. Trigger points caused by chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome may require treatment on a regular or as needed basis.

Corticosteroid injections, Hyaluronic Acid (e.g. Synvisc, Hyalgan) or Platelet Rich Plasm are used for symptom relief from Osteoarthritis.

Corticosteroid shots ease pain faster than anti-inflammatory pills and are concentrated in the joint. Corticosteroids help fight inflammation thus reducing the redness, pain, and swelling in the joint.

Hyaluronic acid is a gel-like substance that is naturally present throughout the body. In the joints, it has several functions, including:

• Lubrication. Hyaluronic acid binds to water, producing a viscous, jelly-like consistency which provides lubrication and also acts as a shock absorber within the joint.

• Growth of cartilage and bone by promoting the growth of new cells and tissues.

• Reducing inflammation and pain caused by injury or tissue degeneration.
